The downside to single player is that you're not facing humans. Even if you get thoroughly trounced, you can learn a lot early on from just watching what they did to you in replays. I've been investing fairly little time in it, and I can confidently say that were I to play three vektors at the skill level I started at, I would now walk all over all three of me.

Little more info on Civ combat on page 2 of this article: One unit per tile means there will be fewer units, but units will be more powerful, worth more, not as mass-producable, and become hardened as they are successful in combat - making veteran units strategic resources. -
Eye of the Night
13:28:39 03/11/10
(7)
If you read, you'd have seen that your benchmarks were done using a setup that's most advantageous for ATI and least for nVidia, as the benchmarks were using simultaneous AA and Tesselation. ATI has dedicated tesselation hardware, nVidia does tesselation alongside AA on the CUDA core which slows things down slightly...

Well I can't see that video at work right now but I'm going to suggest that maybe if one of the new big dx11 technologies that the companies are making noise about is tessellation, then it makes sense that nVidia and ATI would benchmark their tessellation engines?

ATI designed their GPU for mainstream, serving high-end with dual-gpu cards. Nvidia designed their chip for high end, scaling down for mainstream. So the prices of the 5970 and Fermi should be comparable. [NT]

I've got a Radeon HD4700, picked it up back in August so it's not near the top-of-the-line anymore, runs fine, haven't had any heat problems, but I've rediscovered the fact that updating Radeon drivers is a huge pain in the ass, compared to Nvidia ones. If you find Nividia and Radeon cares in the same price/performance ballpark, I recommend going Nvidia just for that. [NT]

No, they weren't different versions. They were different components of the driver package, given confusing, prominently-displayed different version numbering schemes. Like, the driver that came in the package didn't have the same version number as the package itself. [NT]

Isn't nVidia debuting a new line of 200-series cards soon? They'll almost certainly hit market before SC2 and D3 ship and will both drive the price of older tech down or bring higher performance hardware to the low-mid price range. That said, I haven't run into anything my 260GTX won't run. [NT]

(10)
I... wouldn't that be the definition of weakest? [NT]
-
Fron
17:27:25 03/11/10
(9)
No. It could mean they're harder to use than the other two races or have a less competent player base or people just haven't figured out the quirks yet, but not necessarily weak as in being pushovers.
-
El Cazador
18:15:57 03/11/10
(3)
If they're strictly harder to use then that's an imbalance too. The possibility that people simply hadn't figured out how to use them was brought up in the interview. So, we can lengthen the thesis to "the things people know how to do with terrans are weaker than the things people know how to do with zerg and protoss right now". [NT]
-
Fron
19:01:09 03/11/10
(2)
Personally, I'm all for them continuing beefing terran up. However, if people "get" how to play the race afterwards, then they'll hve to nerf it back.
-
El Cazador
23:08:09 03/11/10
(0)
Yeah, it's entirely probable that this is the case. I'm mostly arguing to be pedantic about the possibility that the sample data MIGHT be skewed by social/behavioural factors. [NT]
-
Vektor
21:43:14 03/11/10
(0)
Depends on the play percentage. If only 15% of the players are picking Terran, even if they win most the time they could have a lower percentage of the total wins. [NT]
-
Pez
17:57:07 03/11/10
(4)
They don't do it like that, they do it like EotN said. PvZ is about 50/50, but PvT and TvZ win percentages are both unfavourable for Terran right now. And presumably they're being intelligent about player skill as well. Anyway, I don't have the stats myself, just one sentence from Dustin Browder in an interview, so whatever. [NT]
-
Fron
18:59:38 03/11/10
(0)
Don't they use smarter statistics than that? Like the chance of terran beating protoss and the chance of terran beating zerg in 1v1 matches? [NT]
-
Eye of the Night
18:27:47 03/11/10
(2)
Right, but assume for a second that all the races are of identical power. If the better players are skewed toward playing zerg/protoss (possibly due to familiarity and practice prior to the nerfs), then the toss/zerg win ratio is going to be higher vs. terrans simply by virtue of the fact that better players are skewed toward using toss/zerg and better players (by definition) win more matches. [NT]
-
Vektor
18:33:46 03/11/10
(1)
Yes, that problem still remains - at least until enough matches have been played and they can calculate the score per league on the ladder, which by then should even out skill differences somewhat. [NT]
-
Eye of the Night
19:30:50 03/11/10
(0)
It's possible that, at the high skill levels, all the little tricks Terrans pull simply don't work on a prepared Zerg or Toss player. I'm only Bronze league, so the second possibility is simply that I suck. :P [NT]
-
Jayj
13:27:42 03/11/10
(7)
I wonder about you having said brood lords didn't help you, I've seen a couple videos on youtube of brood lords just obliterating Terran ground forces (although in those cases the terrans had siege tanks, which are rendered a pretty huge liability by the nature of the brood lord's attack) [NT]
-
Fron@Work
13:58:14 03/11/10
(2)
Well, all things being equal, by the time you built up to brood lords, a terran player should be nearing the top of his tech tree as well, which means BATTLECRUISERS! [NT]
-
Vektor
14:24:32 03/11/10
(1)
Not necessarily. The good players appear to choose teching as a response to a particular situation in which they need/want specific advanced units, they won't just gradually move towards having battlecruisers as a default. [NT]
-
Fron
19:02:35 03/11/10
(0)
It could also be simple statistical bias. All the good players started protoss because of the early pre-nerf power they had, or zerg to counter the protoss (roaches were a hard counter to early zealots as I recall). They remain most familiar and skilled with their race of choice and continue playing it until there's a strong reason not to. Ergo, bias toward protoss/zerg in high level players.

According to the in-game help, Planet /did/ care about roads just as much as it did farms, mines, and solar collectors. It's just that roads aren't that big of a proportional increase over those three, and they do nothing to affect mineral-usage-based econ damage. So while Planet cares, adding a road doesn't make it care enough /more/ for it to matter most of the time. [NT]

Not really. Some 16-bit programs don't work natively, but a lot of them work in DOSbox. Also, not all hardware has 64-bit drivers available, and some software also makes use of drivers - which may not be 64-bit. But those are but minor inconveniences. [NT]

While this is true, it's worth noting that 64-bit Vista drivers work perfectly (most of the time) under 7. Though it's true that most companies who bothered releasing Vista 64 drivers would do the same for 7, there may be a few that haven't gotten around to it yet (or discontinued the product and isn't providing driver updates). 16-bit software no longer works at all on Win64, so pre-Windows 95 software won't run. This is unlikely to be a problem. Some installers from the Win9x era are 16-bit even though the software itself is 32-bit, but I believe there are specific workarounds built into Win7 to deal with this. The retail Ultimate edition has separate discs for 32- and 64-bit.

How do those generally go? Opponent using a small number of reapers early to jet up a ledge and past your defenses into your probes? It seems that would be a cost-effective way to do economic damage early. My problem is that early game infrastructure building is important, and I tend to have a hard time maintaining focus between an early attempt at economic damage and building out my own stuff. [NT]

Neat to see how they've upgraded the zerg graphically. Even more organic-y and creepy (pardon the pun) now. Also, have siege tanks fallen by the wayside, or just become defensive units? [NT]

I see some terrans using them offensively. If you get a drop ship you can still drop a handful of siege tanks into an enemy base to cause a ruckus. I personally prefer to use them defensively and go for Thors offensively [NT]

Every time I see someone mention a Thor now, my old WoW mentality kicks in: Thor-KoS (Kill those damn Thors on-sight). I was part of a PvP guild on Kel'Thuzad, and we were on quite a few Horde KoS lists apparently. [NT]

I'll usually park a pair near a base's chokepoint if I'm expecting incoming just for fire support. They actually deal reasonable damage vs. armored targets, too. I've only ever used them as part of mixed forces though, never en masse. [NT]

Even away from ramps? Some deployed siege tanks combined with aerial units to make the targets visible can really wreak havoc... isn't that still viable in SC2? [NT]

It's viable. But as you saw, mass Thors ripped through the lisks pretty easily as well. The Thors are quicker to setup too as they move straight in, plus they can attack air as well as ground, where as the siege tank has to rely on support for air procection [NT]

Well, thors are more of an investment than seige tanks. In general though, static defenses aren't necessarily always your best option. I find you want to have decently mobilized forces to be able to directly counterattack after an opponent hits your units, as that's when they're likely to be weakest. It lets you keep pressure on them and prevents them from sitting idle and out-teching you.

I found that on that particular map where you have such a long open space, it's impossible to completely wall in so that loop was quite nice and it forced the melee to get close to the Planetary Fortress cannon. [NT]

It's harder to wall in the natural expansions from the get-go. I'm surprised you did that. Terran usually walls off the entrance to their start zone with a barracks and couple of depots from the start to keep scouts out.

Other than saving as HD and recording at half-resolution, just try recording at 30 FPS if at all possible. You're probably pushing your laptop to its limit while recording, though, so I think that's the best we're going to get. [NT]

Yeah, you'll want to ask someone with actual official question-answering status about that, I think. I'm inclined to guess that if you're a legal resident you get covered (you'd be paying taxes after all) but I don't really know. Also note, healthcare is a provincial thing. So look for answers at the provincial government websites, not the federal one. [NT]
